1. Safety & Connection (Ventral State)
This is the state your system is always moving toward.
What your mind might say:
“I feel okay being here.”

What your body might feel:
Steady breathing

2. Fight
This is the part of you that rises when something feels wrong.

What your body might feel:
Tight jaw
Clenched fists
Heat rising in the body

3. Flight

What your body might feel:
Racing heart
Shallow or quick breathing
Restlessness in the legs or body

Slowing down enough to feel what’s underneath

4. Freeze (High Alert, Stuck State)
This is where the system gets overwhelmed, but it doesn’t fully shut down.
What your mind might say:
“I don’t know what to do.”
“I feel stuck.”
“Why can’t I just move forward?”
“Something feels off, but I can’t explain it.”
“I should do something… but I can’t.”
What your body might feel:
Tension with stillness
Holding your breath without realizing it
A tight or frozen feeling in the body
Eyes fixed or unfocused
Energy present—but stuck

Making the “wrong” move
Getting it wrong

Failing or being judged

5. Shutdown (Dorsal State)

Low energy or fatigue
Numbness or lack of sensation

Rejection
Conflict
Disconnection
Not being liked or accepted
