Infrared Hot Yoga Benefits: A More Supportive Way to Warm the Body and Regulate the Nervous System

There are many ways to heat a yoga room.
Some feel intense. Some feel overwhelming. Some ask your body to push through.
And then there is a different kind of heat— one that feels like it’s working with you.
In my classes, I use infrared heating lamps instead of traditional hot air. The difference is subtle at first, but your body recognizes it quickly. It doesn’t feel like something you have to endure. It feels like something you can soften into.
What Infrared Heat Feels Like in the Body
Infrared heat warms you in a way that is closer to nature.
Instead of heating the air, it gently warms your body directly—similar to the feeling of sunlight on your skin. Even on a cool day, the sun can still reach you. It doesn’t force. It simply arrives.
As the body begins to warm, the muscles start to soften. The joints feel more open. There is often a quiet sense of space that begins to form from the inside.
This kind of warmth doesn’t rush you. It allows you to arrive gradually.
Supporting Circulation and the Heart
As your body warms, your circulation naturally increases. Blood begins to move more freely, and your heart responds with a gentle rise in activity—similar to light, supportive exercise.
This process helps the body deliver oxygen and nutrients more efficiently, while also encouraging the blood vessels to expand and relax.
Over time, this kind of environment can support overall cardiovascular function in a way that feels steady, not stressful.
There is no need to push the heart. It is simply invited to participate.
A More Regulated Nervous System
One of the most important parts of any practice is how the nervous system responds.
In environments that feel too hot or too intense, the body can shift into a state of stress without you even realizing it. Breathing becomes shallow. Awareness narrows. The body begins to brace.
Infrared heat offers something different.
Because the warmth is more natural and breathable, the body is more likely to remain in a state of regulation—where you can still feel yourself, still notice your breath, still stay present.
From this place, the practice changes.
You are no longer pushing through. You are listening.
And in that listening, the body begins to open in a way that feels safe.
Staying Present in a Warm Body
Heat has an interesting effect on the body.
As circulation increases and tissues soften, it can become easier to move deeper into a stretch. Sometimes, the body feels more capable than it actually is in that moment.
This is where awareness becomes essential.
In my classes, I gently guide you back to your body again and again— noticing where you are, feeling your edge, and choosing to stay connected rather than going further.
The goal is not depth. The goal is relationship.
When you remain present, the body responds with trust instead of resistance.
Creating a Space That Supports You
To keep the environment balanced, I use humidifiers so the room does not feel dry or harsh.
The air stays soft. The breath stays available.
You are not fighting the environment. You are being supported by it.
Making Space for What You Carry
The body holds more than muscle.
It holds stress, emotion, experiences—sometimes things we don’t even have words for.
If you come into class with something you would like to share, you are always welcome to share that with me. Together, we can hold a quiet intention for your practice.
Through movement, breath, and presence, the body often begins to let go in its own way.
Nothing is forced. Nothing is rushed.
There is simply space.
Cooling, Resting, and Receiving
At the end of class, everything shifts.
The heat fades into stillness, and the body is given time to rest.
I offer a cool washcloth infused with a touch of essential oil, gently placed across the face while leaving space to breathe. After the warmth of practice, this moment often feels like a quiet exhale.
The nervous system begins to settle. The body recognizes that it is safe to let go.
You don’t have to do anything here. You simply receive.
A Different Experience of Hot Yoga
Infrared hot yoga is not just about sweating or stretching.
It is about creating an environment where your body can open without force, where your breath can stay steady, and where your nervous system can remain supported.
It is a way to:
improve circulation and gently support the heart
relax the body more deeply
stay present and aware in your movement
create space for both physical and emotional release
But more than anything, it is an opportunity to reconnect with yourself.
Final Thought
There is nothing you need to prove in this practice.
You don’t have to go deeper. You don’t have to push harder.
You are allowed to move in a way that feels honest.
And from that place, the body often gives you more than you expected— not because you forced it, but because you listened.
